Linux Mint 12 Review – Linux Distro Reviews

50

A review of the much-anticipated Linux Mint 12 ‘Lisa’ operating system. Overall, this distribution bridges a wide gap between the traditional desktop interface, and the future desktop of Gnome 3. Top of the line open-source applications with custom Mint tools make for a very nice, albeit limited, user experience. I like the direction that Linux Mint 12 is headed, but there are still some implementation tweaks that need to be made in both Gnome 3′s Mint Gnome Shell Extensions (MGSE) and the Gnome 2 fork MATE desktop environment. Let me know what you think below! Thanks again everyone and more vids are on the way!

Yes we ignored Linux when we examined Macs and PCs but no longer. We have joined the mole people. (You’ll have to watch the video to understand.)

Excellent review. For all that Mint 12 is and their plans for the future – I think they are doing what is best for the community. Unity is fail. Gnome3 is fail. The direction “Linux Desktop” is going is also fail. Good to see Mint is trying to make the best of it FOR THE USERS. If you want customization and total control, maybe Mint is not the best choice at this time. If you want to be part of the “chattel” — go along for the ride. If not, take control of your desktop experience — use Arch.

I’ve been using Linux Mint 12 with Gnome Shell Extensions as my primary OS (dual booted with Windows 7 Starter). I am a previous user of Linux Mint 11 which I liked very much. Linux Mint 12 looks better and seems to be more integrated and have less bugs than Linux Mint 11. I do not like the limited changeability (such as the menu) and functionality, although I think it is cleaner and easier to use. I will continue to use it until Linux Mint 13 comes out and I think it is a good release overall.

faggots, use windows or a mac you dumb fucking losers

duminicad @ 4:38 am #

no current linux distro that I’ve tried is stable enough as windows is… can’t run 2-3 VM’s(VMWare) on it because it friggin’ burns my CPU, it’s sad… very sad… another year on Windows… oh well…

009r5t @ 4:50 am #

@sceptreofjudah well you could always switch to windows – its basically the same GUI since 95…. of course with windows 8…. *grin*

I totally agree with you though. gnome 2 was perfect – f*** knows why the messed with it. That said, out of all the options – unity is the most promising .

menzo123456789 @ 5:13 am #

linux mint has to many bugs its not stable yet

CCoppa68 @ 5:17 am #

Professional review as always. I have mint 12 on my big pc without the ATI driver installed I l wait for them to get it straight. I really like mint 12 gnome 3 and will stay with it. My small pc has arch linux on it with xfce and thats coo to play with.

InfinitelyGalactic @ 6:09 am #

@mustyouknowme It should install automatically, if not…it will ask you to install the drivers for you. In most cases, it’s very easy. :-)

mustyouknowme @ 6:33 am #

pls i want to know if i install the mint 12 will it automatically install my wireless drivers or do i have to do that later on, i am using an acer aspire 5552. thanks

I’m using Mint 12 Mate, and wow, it is amazingly usable. It is exactly what I’d hoped it would be. After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10, I was very frustrated with unity, and Gnome Shell is incompatible with my hardware. But thanks to Mint 12, I have my system setup exactly the way I did with Ubuntu 11.04, but now with the mint menu.

@sceptreofjudah The objectives of these Linux distros are to provide a free open-source alternative to Windows/Mac, and that means delivering a product that is straightforward for everyone to use. Believe it or not, most people don’t want to have to memorize lists of commands or learn how to compile code when all they want to do is browse the Internet, type up a paper, or even play a game or two. Why release a distro only for power users? You don’t, because they’re power users.

scharkalvin @ 8:37 am #

I’ve tried Linux Mint 12 AMD64. It does not detect all of my USB printers (can’t find my Epson R300 but does find my HP LJ1320. Other distro’s using the latest CUPS such as Kubuntu seem to have the same issue and LMDE Xfce doesn’t find any of my printers at all.
Anybody else having CUPS issues?

kjah11 @ 9:34 am #

@sceptreofjudah
arch Linux ???

youplaymenot @ 10:23 am #

@sceptreofjudah I read ubuntu didnt give any configurability in 11.04 or 11.10 because it was all about defaults because they had to make sure everything was working right so when 12.04 comes out we should get that configurability back, but who knows whats up with canonical right now there just being different i suppose…

SuperCoding @ 10:28 am #

Using distowatch to measure usage is a huge fallacy. The site counts number of visits to the sites, not downloads or anything else. Not trollin, just sayin……

rifall @ 10:57 am #

Linux mint is getting it most right out of all Distros I’ve seen. The problem, I believe, is that there was too much aiming for “flash” and not enough for “polish”. Getting everything streamlined isn’t difficult if you make sure you’re polished first. But starting over shouldn’t be necessary unless you’re clearing out bugs. I’m annoyed that because of the streamline movement, Linux is turning into something that requires better specs, instead of a reviver of ancient computers.

@sceptreofjudah
Well then use GNU

BrightestBlackSheep @ 12:15 pm #

I’m sticking to Mint 11 Katya dude. I downloaded and played around with 12 Lisa on my test system and was disappointed with the fact you cant move the top bar that has gnome 3. You’re absolutely right that the MATE menu isn’t as good as the mint menu from past releases. I don’t really see any game changing reasons to upgrade. I’m quite fine with Mint 11/Gnome 2. What did Linus call Gnome 3? Oh yeah an Unholy Mess. In regards to support ending in October….lets see what Mint 13 brings….

vinmaster25 @ 12:27 pm #

awesome super fast even on s*** computers

IDontDoDrumCovers @ 12:32 pm #

@maw88ify i know it is but i would clump it all together, there are lots of different breeds of dogs but they are still all dogs

maw88ify @ 12:36 pm #

@IDontDoDrumCovers Mac OS is also UNIX based , but you don’t just clump them all together , because they have their own personalities . That like saying a “siamese, tigar and a Lion ” and are all a breed of cat .

IDontDoDrumCovers @ 12:58 pm #

@maw88ify -.- they are all unix tho

maw88ify @ 1:16 pm #

@IDontDoDrumCovers He also forgot BSD , and Plan9 OS, and Solaris.

mysticNTN @ 1:28 pm #

u sir, are funny. ill be back for more.

IDontDoDrumCovers @ 2:18 pm #

what about unix? :P

tangofizz77 @ 2:20 pm #

I installed Ubuntu on my mom’s laptop, best thing that machine has operated on.

oskarawesome @ 3:10 pm #

the internet problem is an ubuntu rite of passage

(hint: ethernet)

shrey2smart @ 3:26 pm #

if your wifi didnt work ; you should connect through LAN cable to update .

andamat @ 3:45 pm #

I switched entirely to GNU/Linux a few years ago and I can honestly not find a single good reason ever to use Windows again. Not at all. The feeling of freedom is very powerful and the responsiveness and reliability is great bonus! But that’s just my experience, yours may differ:-)

domdomdom1993 @ 5:01 pm #

@ExusGames thank you , i watched jakes vids and that explained most of what i needed to know. I’ll probably get the nettop after xmas

Two things that bear mentioning:
(1) If you had bought a laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed, you would have been able to get up and running. Try installing Mac OSX on a Dell and see how far you get, or even Windows on a MacBook.
(2) Ubuntu has a Software Centre where you can actually buy some pretty cool things. It’s no “App Store”, but Linux isn’t just for cheapskates — it’s also for people who genuinely enjoy the user experience and aesthetic of open source.
Pretty fair video though.

maw88ify @ 5:39 pm #

@domdomdom1993 Microsoft word can run in Linux . Just install WINE , and a copy of Office 2007 , and it will work perfectly fine . You must have a program like WINE , or crossover installed to run Windows programs. WINE is free, and can be installed from the software center . If you need help ask.

ZomZilla @ 5:48 pm #

That wifi… Has to be Broadcom lol

ExusGames @ 6:40 pm #

@domdomdom1993 Hello, to keep it short Linux will not run Microsoft word. However there are programs that come with Linux like “Openoffice” or “libreoffice”. These are both great alternatives. There is a guy on YouTube called “Jakejw93″ he does gaming in Linux videos so i suggest you check them out about your gaming question. Music and videos will run fine and aslong as the graphics card is good then like any other computer it should run HD video. Thanks, Hoped it helped!

domdomdom1993 @ 6:43 pm #

im about to by a new pc (acer aspire revo r3700) and its running LINUX which ive never seen let alone owned. whats the pro’s and cons? does it run microsoft word? whats it like with games, music, videos in hd?

emewify @ 7:35 pm #

@xpressrazor who uses sudo? lol oh yeah mac os x and ubuntu… im fedora 14 user

cjva1688 @ 7:57 pm #

@emewify I would probably pay for free as in freedom, since thats what gnu/linux gives me. =)

freebsddick @ 8:04 pm #

this guy is just like those those cannot think by himself … other thing is he doesn’t know anything!!

xpressrazor @ 8:44 pm #

I think you mean
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source
when you said you fixed wireless on dell laptop. Recent laptops don’t have such problem.

emewify @ 9:26 pm #

@mastercontrol5000 because that what someone smart would do

dude00074 @ 9:38 pm #

I didn’t have much trouble with wifi on Ubuntu. On puppy linux on the other hand ( my first distro ) i still haven’t fix it. After a few minutes on the Ubuntu forum my wifi problem was fixed :)

dude00074 @ 9:39 pm #

@mastercontrol5000 He did…he just didn’t do that first.
