When you install linux on ps3, can you still choose to have the ps3 OS be the default start-up OS?

I want to install linux but still have my ps3 boot into the ps3 os when i turn it on, then be able to enter linux from the settings menu or something once I’m there.

What is the difference between Yellow Dog Linux 6 Mirror and just Yellow Dog Linux 6? Is it ok if i put the mirror into my PS3? Will it work like the regular one?
